At The Gates is a death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. At The Gates has played a major role in the development of Swedish death metal. They are precursors and trendsetters for what death Metal has later known as the Gothenburg sound, or in Swedish ”Gothenburg death”, within which bands like in Flames, Dark Tranquillity and others are categorized. At the Gates was formed 1990 from the then defunct band Grotesque. The band’s biggest success is the album Slaughter of the Soul from 1995.
